I am a fully qualified sports massage therapist (SMA) and studied with the Sports Massage Academy in Nottingham, obtaining a Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy, which is a nationally recognized qualification.  I also studied Tui Na (Chinese Massage) through out my acupuncture degree and regularly perform massage as either a therapeutic intervention by itself or as part of an integrated treatment, that may combine elements of acupuncture, massage, cupping and moxibustion.
I am a member of the Sports Therapy Association.

The Benefits of Sports Massage

Sports massage therapy is the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues within the body, specifically the muscles, ligaments and tendons.
Sports massage therapy is suitable for both athletes and a wide variety of people who would like to prevent or recover from a soft tissue injury.  The aim of a sports massage is to alleviate tension in your musculo-skeletal system.
A sports massage can not only help treat your current strains and tension but be used as a method of preventing future injury.  These include overuse or repetitive strain injuries whether they are from your daily activities or from your training regime.

Muscle Benefits

Sports Massage techniques work by manually manipulating the muscles, fascia and tendons to reduce muscle pain and strains.  Through breaking down scar tissue and using both active and passive stretching it is able to reduce muscle tightness.  Many muscles like your quadriceps are made up of several muscles. By examining and treating them individually you can restore and re-balance muscular imbalance.

Preventing Injuries

Sports massage can help to prevent injuries in several ways; by using a combination of stretches and massage techniques it is possible to increase the range of movement and flexibility within the muscles therefore reducing the risk of injury.  Another advantage is that sports massage increases the tone and quality of muscles thus aiding over all recovery and injury, which in turn will help to alleviate fatigue.

Through techniques such as effleurage and petrissage, a sports massage can improve the circulation and lymphatic function of the body.  Through increasing lymph draining it is possible to reduce swelling to the joints and muscles. Also due to the increase in blood supply during a sports massage the level of oxygen uptake is increased, while the removal of harmful bi-products that might build up in the muscles are also increased, preventing further tightness and possibly injury.
